Next time you go to the market to pick up a quart of milk, you may notice that there are two women sitting in the cafe with their drop spindles laughing and tossing fibery bits about and looking like they’re having a grand old time. They’re even answering questions from passersby and making jokes with the people who were only staring a minute ago.
And then again, you might not.
But if you were in Wholefoods in Newton last Tuesday and that’s what you saw, it was just Laurie and me. You should have said hello. We were in a very friendly mood.
And for all the gardeners out there (I’m inspired to share since Laurie has a garden and knows everything by their secret Latin names) here’s the magic I found on my morning survey: a tree peony of unknown name, but I’m guessing it’s a Favorite Concubine.

Why oh why oh why did I move away from Boston…
Oh, that’s right, I fell in love. Damn.
I would have said the hell with the groceries and sat down for a lesson 🙂
You must mean the Whole Foods on Washington Street? Because there’s no cafe in the one at Four Corners, is there? Well darn, I used to work close enough to there to walk out to buy lunch at the salad bar. Not since Jan ’02, though. So I didn’t just barely miss you.
Now that’s a party I would have loved to join! I have a spindle in the cupboard which I have yet to work up the courage to use. I just look at the spindle-spinning book and my eyes start to cross. But spinning in public sounds like so much fun, I should definitely do something about my spindle-fear. I bet it’s easier to learn from a person than from a book anyway.
I love the wool all over the table and near the window. Two happy spinners in Wholefoods. They should be paying you to create a wonderful spinner-friendly environment.
Our goal of world domination continues apace….
Some people get to shop in all the best places 🙂
Oooh, tree peony?! They’re rare-ish and take forever to grow. Lucky you. It’s just gorgeous.
I saw a very small tree peony at Red Butte last week. Yours is much more exquisite.
Spinning in Whole Foods, with Laurie…food, fiber, friends. Sounds addicting.
I think so too (Tipsy Imperial Concubine). It is gorgeous. Thank GOD you hid my crutch. But isn’t everyone going to think odd things of this woman with her legs tightly clutched together, holding….a…oh never mind.
I wanna be a Favorite Concubine. I would never have suspected myself of such an ambition, but really…what a great name.
Or a Tipsy Imperial Concubine. Even better.
I wish you’d come down here and teach me how to use a drop spindle. Yes, I caved in Fredericksburg this weekend!
Glad you are feeling better. I’m terribly sorry about your friend. He and his family are in my prayers.
it looks like you had a wonderful time in a great place! the flower is beautiful; I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one before.
for this weekend: do you know how to get on 295 without paying the toll? and, if you’re interested, I can send you a link to the strangest yarn store I’ve ever been to; I think it’s about halfway from where you are to where you’re going. 🙂
~sigh~ nobody EVER spins in MY grocery store. Ever.
Ooh – they have Whole Foods in the Boston area? (And some people like to spin there, no less?) This bodes well for my upcoming move.
The Whole Foods in Newton! I work on Needham Street next to the large Sheraton on the hill 🙂 Too funny and close! If I see you in there knitting, I will definitely say hi!
Golly, I wish I saw people spinning in public! People knitting in public are rare enough here (I’m one of them though!).
If I did see someone KIPping or SIPping, I might well say hello cos it is probable that I know them.
Hey there Julia — a big shout out to ya! Oh, I was sorry to hear about your friend. I was just in Borders for our SnB with someone drop spindl-ing. (Is that a verb?) And her husband was there with his weaving, even! 🙂
